I do love to explore a new park in Milton Keynes, especially one that I can spend ages at with my 2-year-old while she runs around. Recently we were in the Wolverton area while I was cat-sitting, and came across this park so we had to go for a visit.
Western Road Recreation Ground is in the Wolverton area of Milton Keynes, just outside of the pool. It’s not an enclosed park, but it’s surrounded by lots of green space away from the road, so I wasn’t concerned about my 2-year-old running off. The majority of the equipment in the park is wooden – which I love, and it helps that it doesn’t get as slippy in wet weather!
At this park, there’s a large wooden climbing frame that has various different ways of getting up and down it. Although my 2-year-old is rather adventurous, she was only tall enough to walk up the steps. There are then various ledges, and levels you can climb onto, and poles and climbing walls to get back down. Ivy spent most of her time going up and down between the two levels playing hide and seek. It’s a great climbing frame to play on, only thing is there’s not much space on it so I can imagine it gets quite busy – and it also doesn’t have a slide, which I think would improve it.
Next to the climbing frame, there are various other wooden assault course items, along with an accessible roundabout. I’ve found a few parks now with these, and I love that they are included in parks.
After spending a long time playing on the climbing frame, we went to explore the rest of the park and found the trampoline. It’s seen slightly better days, but still does the job and Ivy loved jumping up and down! There’s also a large bucket swing and a seesaw-type swing where you can sit on either side and go up and down like a seesaw!
You can see in the background of my photos there’s also an orbital-type stage – it was fenced off when we visited, but I know that there have occasionally been events happening at Western Raod Recreation Ground where there have been live music performances!
Towards the back of the park, there was some smaller equipment that is more suited to toddlers and smaller children, including baby swings, a slide, a dragonfly-shaped rocker, and a large wooden snake. There were also some speakers that you can speak into and it comes out in the one opposite which was fun! We’ve seen these before at Caterpillar Park if you enjoy them and want to try another park.
Ivy really loved the slide at this park, it’s a great size for toddlers but also benefits from being on a hill so it feels higher than it actually is! We also had lots of fun climbing on the wooden snake and jumping off!
We really enjoyed this park, it was quite muddy when we visited so be prepared if you’re visiting after wet weather as we did! There’s also lots of green space around the park so plenty of room to run around, play football, or bring a picnic with you in the summer.
