I do love a festive day out, even more so if it’s fully of colourful fairy lights! Christmas time is my favourite time of the year, it just feels so magical to wrap up warm and head out to look at various lights. Now that we are in December, I’m officially in festive mode, planning fun things to do with the kids at home and out exploring.
Something that we only started doing a few years ago was to visit a light trail. I’ve always seen them on Facebook and wanted to go, but with the likes of Blenheim Palace being rather spenny, we’ve never got around to it.
However, back in 2021 we attended Stockwood Illuminated for the first time, and absolutely loved the light trail, and found it to be a cheaper alternative, and equally amazing. I’m originally from Luton, but had never visited Stockwood Discovery Centre, and loved our visit so much we’ve raved about it ever since. This year we were kindly invited back again to visit and see what had changed with the kids, and head out on another festive evening of fun!
Stockwood Illuminated Light Trail
Stockwood Illuminated is a self-guided tour, with the idea being you follow the lights to see where they take you and have your own adventure. You walk through the historic Stockwood Gardens following the trail, with different areas lit up with unique sounds playing as you walk around.
For 2025, the light trail has doubled from 500 metres to one kilometre, with over 20 light creations and a custom-made soundtrack. The light creations are inspired by fairy tales, fast reaction games, water and ice – as well as a few extra surprises!
This was our third time visiting Stockwood Illuminated and came to the 6pm slot with our 6-year-old and a baby in a pushchair – it was the first time we’ve done something like this with a pushchair and found the trail very accessible!
We have always loved our visits to Stockwood Illuminated, but I’ve got to say this year is by far the best visit we’ve had here! The trail felt very whimsical and magical, with so much to look at as you walked around. There were loads of photo opportunities as you walked around, and some fun interactive displays!
We really loved visiting Stockwood Illuminated, and I think for less than £10 a ticket it’s a nice affordable alternative to other light shows, and a great activity to do with the kids. The lights and sounds had a lovely whimsical feel to them, and I loved watching the kids running around the gardens excited to see them all. I also really enjoyed the interactive elements that were around the trail this year, we had a great laugh with them!
Stockwood Discovery Centre is open all year 10 am – 4 pm Wednesday to Sunday and is free to visit (and park!), and I think we’ll be heading back here to visit the rest of it soon!

Good to Know
- This year Stockwood Illuminated is on between 12th December and 4th January 2026. You can book tickets on the Culture Trust website
- Tickets cost £9 for adults and £5.50 for children and concessions
- Slots are every 30 minutes from 4.30pm until 8.00pm
- It took us around 60 minutes to slowly wonder around, and there’s no rush to make your way around!
- The cafe is also open so you can buy hot chocolates, coffees, mulled wine and cakes to walk around with! When we visited there were also stalls outside serving drinks, snacks and marshmallow toasting!
