I love the independent food scene in Milton Keynes, there’s so much choice and lots of incredible places to visit. After reading lots of raving reviews, I decided I had to try out Mii & U Oriental, which has been described as a great hidden gem in Milton Keynes.
Mii & U Oriental serves dishes from East and South East Asia, served in a canteen style restaurant. Chris and I visited one afternoon for a quick lunch break lunch trip one day during the week, and it was pretty busy with others doing the same thing. Mii & U isn’t the biggest of restaurants, so I can imagine it can get quite busy at times!
To be completely honest when I first visited Mii & U I was a little taken back by the decor, as it didn’t look like other oriental restuarents I’ve visited, and it looked so – casual? I wasn’t really too sure what to expect, but with so many fantastic reviews I knew not to be put off with how it looks and concentrate on the food.
When ever Chris and I visit somewhere new we try to order a few different dishes and share them between us both, so we can explore the menu. When we visited Mii & U Oriental there were several side dishes we both liked the sound of, but we settled on ordering a large vegetable and pork bao, tempura calamari rings, and chicken and vegetable gyozas.
I haven’t had bao for ages, and I always enjoy it when I get it so I was very excited – and it was honestly the most perfect, fluffy, delicious bao I’ve ever tasted. We both love calamari, so choosing the tempura calamari rings was a no brainer. The tempura batter was perfectly crispy, and the sweet plum and vinegar dip that came with it was the perfect accompliment. Our last side dish, the gyozas, were some of the best gyozas I’ve ever had – amazingly cripsy, packed with plenty of filling. Since visiting I’ve learnt that Central Oriental next door has these you can buy and freeze, so I’ll be stocking up on these soon.
For our mains, we both chose a katsu curry. Chris had the chicken katsu curry, while I went for the vegetarian yasai katsu curry. The portions were a very generious size for the price you pay at Mii & U Oriental – and I actually didn’t end up finishing all of mine.
The katsu sauce itself was delicious, and the panko breadcrumbs were very crispy. For my yasai verson I had slices and sweet potato, aubergine and red onion which I felt were all very generous sizes, while Chris had lots of chicken served in his.
Mii & U Oriental also has an outdoor seating area, so during the warmer weather, you can sit outside as well. Next to Mii & U you’ll also find Central Oriental, which has absolutely everything you would ever need for East and South East Asian cooking supplies. During our visit I only had time for a quick look around Central Oriental, but I’m hoping to go back for a proper mooch around again soon!
We visited during Chris’s lunch break for a quick working from home lunch, and we were in and out in about 45 minutes – so a great place to visit during a lunch break! Everything came out in a reasonable time, but we were in no way made to feel rushed with our meal.
I can certainly see why so many people rave about Mii & U Oriental – it’s a great hidden gem of Milton Keynes. The food is delcious and the prices are really reasonable – you can’t really go wrong at Mii & U.
