Brew & Brownie, York

June 16, 2021

When we were visiting York we were on a mission to find great independent places to eat, and somewhere our Airbnb host recomended was Brew and Brownie. They described it as ‘the best place for breakfast, coffee and pancakes’ – and with a claim like that, I needed to try it.

Brew and Brownie has a cafe and a bakeshop, which serves more of their cakes, cookies and other treats. We visited the cafe on the day that you were allowed to eat inside again, and there was a short queue to wait to get in, but everything ran smoothly – considering they hadn’t been open for indoor bookings for sometime.

Once we were seated we both spent ages looking over the menu, there was anything from full english, to pancakes, to eggs on toast. Chris went for the pancakes option, topped with banana and salted caramel sauce. I’ve not came across perfect American pancakes like these, and they are huge, fluffy, and thick. With the combination of a grilled banana and salted caramel sauce, they were a huge hit for breakfast!

I wanted something different, and went for the brioche french toast option, which was topped with baked necatarine, mascarpone, sweet and spicy almonds, and homemade raspberry coulis. I love french toast, and making it from brioche tastes incredible and really sweet. The toppings were impressive, really sweet, and worked really well with the brioche french toast. Brew and Brownie regularly mix up what they serve on their french toast and pancakes, so it’s worth keeping an eye out on their Facebook page!

Chris opted for a white hot chocolate, which he declares (and still mentions) is the best white hot chocolate he’s ever had. It was creamy and sweet, and came with the option to add cream and marshmellows, and of course, what’s a hot chocolate without them?! I pick my favourite, a chai latte, and the coffee was strong, and the taste was incredible.

While we stayed in York we also had one of their takeaway breakfasts prior to dining inside. This time we both went for the American pancakes with banana and salted caramel sauce, and it was incredible. Even though we collected this and returned home with it before eating, the breakfast was warm and delicious. Fully recomend trying out their takeaway options if you can’t get a table to eat in!
