Our house is full of books, and it’s clear that we are a family that loves to read, and is something that I really try to continue to encourage with my children. Lucky little Ivy has a huge collection of books, as she inherited her older brother’s collection. One thing that I’m really keen on with Ivy’s books is that she has some great books that teach her important lessons, and help her to understand things. A subject that is important for me is that my children understand LGBTQ+ equality and representation, and as June is pride month, I wanted to find children’s books about pride, and here are a few of our favourites.
Children’s Books About Pride Suitable for Toddlers
Our Rainbow by Little Bee Books
This is a lovely little book that teaches children about each colour that makes up the pride flag. The illustrations on each page are done by different artists and look fantastic, and it’s a great way to open up conversations about pride with children. I really like the use of colour in this book, is bright and colourful making it appealing to Ivy!

People of Pride books by Little Bee Books
I was excited when I came across the People of Pride series of books, as these are stories that are perhaps aimed at older children, but presented in a way that would appeal to toddlers – helping to show an equal representation and education from an early age. These books celebrate the accomplishments of LGBTQ+ heroes and teach children how they shaped the history of pride. They are written in a really easy way to understand, making them nice stories as well as explaining to children about the LGBTQ+ community.

Love Makes a Family by Sophie Beer
I love this book, it’s just so colourful and has a lovely message behind it. It’s not solely a children’s book about pride but shows a lot of inclusion and different types of families. Each page is beautifully illustrated, has a lovely story, and just shows children that families are full of love.

Children’s Books About Pride for Slightly Older Readers
The Girl With Two Dads by Mel Elliott
This book is out of Ivy’s age range, but I still enjoy reading this to her. This is a great story about a new girl at Pearl’s school who has two dads and learning that while her family may look different, they are the same as other families. I personally really like how it’s explained in this book about the girl with two dads, and how accepting Pearl is of it all.

Uncle Bobby’s Wedding by Sarah Brannen
This one was recommended to me by a friend with an older child, and I love the story behind this. This tells the story of Chloe who’s worried that her relationship with her uncle Bobby will change once he gets married, but instead grows to love her new uncle Jamie too, and learns that sometimes change can be a nice thing. What I really like about this book is that the story of Bobby and his partner Jamie is told in the same way as any other heterosexual relationship would be.

Julian is a Mermaid by Jessica Love
Another book that’s not specifically about pride, but helps to teach children they can be how they want to be. I adore this book and the relationship Julian and his nana have, and how accepting she is. It’s just a really heartwarming book!

Rupaul (Little People, BIG Dreams) by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara
Another story about Rupaul (can you tell I’m a fan?!), teaches children about Rupaul, and how he has played an important role in the history of Pride. It’s a great one for older children, and I’ve shown it to my stepson too, and he likes it as it’s written in an easy-to-understand format.
